A good CCTV system is more than a collection of cameras. The cameras, recording, network, power and monitoring need to be designed as one system so that the footage is useful when you actually need it.
1. Start with the areas that matter
Entrances, driveways, gates, parking areas, reception points, perimeter approaches and high-value areas usually deserve priority. The objective is not simply to install the largest possible number of cameras, but to make sure each camera has a clear job.
2. Match the camera to the scene
A wide overview camera and an identification camera solve different problems. Low-light conditions, distance, backlighting, mounting height and the level of detail required all influence the correct camera choice.
3. Plan recording and storage properly
Storage requirements depend on camera resolution, frame rate, recording method and how long footage must be retained. A system should be sized around the required retention period rather than simply using whatever hard drive happens to be available.
4. Use AI where it adds value
Human and vehicle classification can make alerts more useful by reducing ordinary motion events. On compatible systems, more advanced analytics can also assist with number-plate recognition, video search and perimeter detection.
5. Do not ignore the network and power
IP cameras rely on stable switching, cabling and connectivity. Larger sites may require fibre or engineered wireless links. Backup power for the recorder, switches, routers and cameras can also be important where continuity is required during an outage.
6. Decide how events will be handled
Some sites only need recorded evidence. Others benefit from remote viewing, health monitoring or off-site event monitoring. The response process should be decided as part of the design rather than added as an afterthought.
